Welcome to Irkutsk, Russia Irkutsk was founded in 1661 as a Cossack settlement for trading gold and furs. It was declared a city in 1686, and connected to Europe via a road constructed in 1760. In the 18th century it gained significance as a transportation and trading centre of Eastern Siberia. It was a hub of the Tea Road between China and India and European Russia.
